Physical Development

By first and second grade, children continue to strengthen their coordination, stamina and body awareness. They show increased confidence in their physical abilities and begin applying these skills to structured games, team activities, and more refined tasks requiring control and precision.

At ISA:

  • Structured Physical Education: Students participate in guided PE classes that focus on agility, teamwork, balance, and sportsmanship through games, fitness, routines, and age-appropriate athletic drills.

  • Motor Skills Mastery: We challenge students with activities that enhance both gross motor skills (like running, jumping, throwing) and fine motor skills (like handwriting refinement, tool use, and precise movement tasks).

  • Whole-Body Wellness: Movement is integrated across the day--from active learning breaks to cooperative outdoor play-- supporting both physical health and mental focus.

Social & Emotional Development

First and second graders begin to form more meaningful friendships, express empathy more naturally, and demonstrate clearer sense of right and wrong. They are better able to self-regulate and navigate social challenges with increased independence.

At ISA:

  • Emotional Intelligence & Self Reflection: We help students recognize and name complex emotions, build coping strategies, and reflect on their actions and choices. Journaling, classroom discussions, and mindfulness are used to encourage thoughtful expression

  • Collaborative Learning & Leadership: Through partner work, group projects, and class roles, students practice communication, active listening, and leadership. They learn to resolve conflicts respectfully and work as part of a team --essential skills for long-term success in school and life.

Language Development

Students develop their ability to express themselves through both spoken and written language. They become more confident readers, fluent writers, and thoughtful communicators. Their vocabulary expands, grammar skills sharpen, and they begin to understand the power of words to inform, persuade, and connect.

At ISA:

  • Literacy Fluency & Writing: We guide students in developing reading fluency, comprehension, and structured writing. They explore different writing styles--from narratives to opinion pieces--and strengthen grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

  • Verbal Communication: Through group discussions, oral presentations, and storytelling, students practice speaking with clarity, listening actively, and engaging in respectful dialogue. These experiences build confidence and the ability to express complex thoughts and emotions.

Health & Safety

As students engage in more independent activities, ensuring safety and well-being remains our top priority. We create an environment that supports both emotional and physical security.

At ISA:
